The silence between phrases

It was getting a bit noisy,
so Jerome took out his guitar
and began to quietly play

One by one
the talkers realized
that something else was going on,
and they began to listen

A few less waves of sound,
a few less voices striving
to be heard,
and once again
it was possible
to enjoy the space
between words
and the silence between phrases
