Scent

The last week of September had arrived
and most of the milk flower trees had seemingly yet to offer
their sublime scent
to the village of Pai

Since the middle of the month
every night people had been visiting
the milk flower trees that they knew
to see if they had begun to bloom,
and it appeared that they had not

They’re late this year

Yeah
Maybe because we’ve had less rain than usual
I went by the tree at the courthouse a couple nights ago
and the one over by the gas station
Neither were giving off a scent

There’s one out near the hot springs that has begun to bloom
I could smell it last night as I drove by
And today I found another one
It’s near the intersection where the afternoon market begins
I noticed it while waiting for the light to change

The rain has stopped
Shall we go for a ride and smell the trees?

Let’s go

And so the two friends
rode through the night
and into town
to visit the milk flower trees they knew
and to look for others that they had not yet met
